Dutchman's Pipe - leaves and plant

Sorry, sold out for 2010.

Dutchman’s Pipe is a very vigorous growing vine. It will create a thick green screen in a short period of time, so it’s great for covering a fence, wall or trellis. It has large, heart-shaped leaves and very interesting flowers that are shaped like a small pipe. You may have to look hard to find the flowers--they are only a few inches long and are a yellow-green color. This vine plays an important role in the life of native Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies. The flowers provide nectar for the butterflies, and the leaves are an important food source for the caterpillars of this butterfly. The vigorous growth of this vine makes it easy to share the leaves with these beautiful insects. Plant in moist, well-drained soil.

What you'll receive: Grade #1, 2-year-old plants shipped bareroot (no soil or pot) and dormant (no foliage). Learn more about our plants.

How to Grow

Does best in full sun to shade in consistently moist, organic soil. Be sure to give it a support to climb on, as this vine has vigorous growth.

What's a "bareroot" plant?

Photo of bareroot plant"Bareroot" is a term that describes how a plant is shipped to you. A bareroot plant is not in a pot, and is usually dormant (not actively growing). See the photo to the right that shows what a bareroot rose looks like. The bareroot plants that we ship to you were harvested in the fall and placed in cold storage over the winter to keep them dormant. In the spring, we ship the bareroot plants to our customers, from early April through mid May.

Bareroot plants are easy to grow. We include planting instructions with your order. When you receive your plant, take it out of the packing material and place it in a bucket of water so that the roots are completely covered. Let the roots soak for 4 to 24 hours, then plant it in your garden. Full planting instructions with photos are available on our planting shrubs page.
